Finding Strength in Community: The ETA Journey
Embarking on the Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) journey has been nothing short of transformative. Reflecting on this experience, one thing becomes abundantly clear: community support has been a cornerstone of our progress. While doing this alongside my husband has been a blessing, the broader communities we’ve joined—like the Acquisition Lab and SearchFunder—have been invaluable sources of knowledge, encouragement, and connection.
The Power of Partnership
Having my husband as my partner in this journey has made all the difference. ETA is not just a business endeavor; it’s an emotional rollercoaster filled with highs, lows, setbacks, and triumphs. How many "NOs" must you endure before finally hearing that one "YES" that leads to acquiring your dream company? Having someone who truly understands the stakes and can share the emotional load has been my greatest source of strength. I have immense respect for self-funded solo searchers—it’s a challenging path to navigate alone.
The Acquisition Lab: A Lifeline of Knowledge and Connection
Joining the Acquisition Lab was a pivotal moment for us. The classes are packed with insights—I often revisit them to uncover new gems of wisdom. Walker’s teaching style feels personal and relatable; it’s as if he’s speaking directly to me (even though he doesn’t know me!). Beyond the curriculum, the Slack channel is where the magic happens. It’s a space filled with people who truly "get it." While family and friends may try to understand ETA, it’s hard for them to fully grasp its nuances. The Slack community offers a unique blend of camaraderie and expertise, making it an invaluable resource for asking questions or learning from others’ experiences.
SearchFunder: Expanding Our Network
SearchFunder.com has also played a significant role in our journey, albeit in different ways. Its larger and more diverse community has opened doors we didn’t even know existed. For instance, we’ve recruited two cohorts of interns through SearchFunder—both times receiving an overwhelming response. Applications had to close within 24 hours due to hundreds of submissions! We committed to reading every single application and responding thoughtfully, which meant limiting each cohort to 100 applicants. Beyond recruitment, SearchFunder has connected us with brilliant individuals whose insights have accelerated our learning and enriched our experience.
Advice for New ETA Searchers
If you’re just starting your ETA journey, here’s my advice: build your community early and lean into it often. Whether it’s joining platforms like SearchFunder or structured programs like the Acquisition Lab—or simply finding someone who understands ETA—it’s crucial to surround yourself with people who can validate your efforts and offer guidance during challenging times.
Conclusion: Leaning on Community
ETA is undoubtedly demanding, but the strength found in community can make all the difference. Whether it’s a supportive partner, a structured program like the Acquisition Lab, or wider networks like SearchFunder, these connections provide knowledge, encouragement, and validation—essential ingredients for navigating the complex world of business acquisition. As you embark on or continue your ETA journey, remember: leaning on your community is not just helpful—it’s one of your most valuable assets.
